I was just questioned by a township inspector regarding the use of THWN conductors in conduit for Photovolatic systems. The inspector suggets the use of XHHW in lieu of THWN to counteract this electroendosmosis effects. Does anyone have any commentary reagrding the benfits of X wire of Thermoplastic wire?
 
That big works pertains to the flow of liquid in a conduit. I am not sure how that affects the conduit with wire. There is no technical flow. On another note xhhw, I believe is an all around better insulation in most cases. I just don't see why it is necessary.
 
XHHW is a thermoset polymer, THWN is thermoplastic. Thermoset polymers don't get soft at high temperature, they get harder. The opposite is so for thermoplastic; they flow at high temperature. Wiring to solar panels is usually subject to high temperatures. Be sure to apply the temperature correction factors of 310.15(B)(3)(c) for a hot roof.
