The electronic version of the 2005 NEC is copy and read protected, you can not install it to your hard drive as in the past. When Mike Holt finially got the electronic version he was not pleased as his laptop does not have a CD Rom drive, so he could not use. Using it from the CD drive is slow as it has to spin up to read.
Mike has discontinued selling the electronic version, until the NFPA addresses this issue.
However Mike has found that the Paragon CD Rom emulator V 3, will create a virtual CD on your hard drive, and allow the electronic version to be read from the hard drive. This progam is $29.95 as a download, find it at www.paragon.ag (Mike suggested I post this on the forum).

Also the NEC search engine is different this version....

Re: Electronic Version of 2005 NEC-problem solved

When I purchased the 2005 NEC, I just downloaded it from nfpa.org. It is a .pdf file and you can copy from it up to 50 times a day (I think). I know there were other restriction with the file but I'm not sure what they are.

Is this a problem if you ordered it on CD instead of downloading it?

Re: Electronic Version of 2005 NEC-problem solved

Please excuse me I want to complain.

I must pay $170.00 for a CD-ROM and then pay an additional $30 to use it.

I am not saying I expect the NEC for free, I just want to know why the CD-ROM costs more than the paper version.

At least with Microsoft office I can install it on as many machines as I personally use.

This whole thing gives me a bad attitude toward the NFPAs bean counters.

You are buying a software program, along with the NEC text, when you buy the CDROM. It is the Folio Views database program (or at least, that was the one for the 1999 and 2002 NEC) that allows you to do word searches. The publisher might say that you are also paying for the extra work that they must do, in order to convert the document into a database-compatible format. I think the truth is that it is a newer technology, that it provides a more convenient way to find information, and that people will pay more; so they charge more.

Not true
If you read the EULA it will say that this license is for use on one computer unless multiple license are purchased.

Most are single use only unless stated other wise

BINGO!

So should NFPA . ORG become NFPA . COM?

Wayne the NFPA site shows the 2005 NECH cost at $120.00 for the book, I do not see the price for the 2005 NECH CD-ROM but my 2002 edition cost just under $170.00.

I found one for Publisher 2003:

1. GRANT OF LICENSE. This EULA grants you the following rights:

- Applications Software. You may install and use one copy of the SOFTWARE PRODUCT, or any prior version for the same operating system, on a single computer .
I know I hate it too as you think you own it but in reality you don't :(

Wayne I know that is what the NFPAs agreement is I believe a program like office is not single use, but single user.

I could be wrong as I do not read those that carefully.

Re: Electronic Version of 2005 NEC-problem solved

I'm pretty sure I learned that the NFPA was non-profit, I guess that's not for profit now and I don't know what that changes, and that the NEC writers were volunteers.

If that's true I'm at least as bothered as Bob and somebody's gettin in the shorts if you're forced to buy a text search program you don't need or want. I alredy have a bunch of those.

nfpa.com. I wasn't gonna say anything until you said that Bob :D

Re: Electronic Version of 2005 NEC-problem solved

Wayne NECH = National Electric Code Handbook.

I now have another reason to hate Microsoft.

Re: Electronic Version of 2005 NEC-problem solved

I'll be upset if the new format isn't FolioViews. The only reason I even buy the CD version is for the search, which I think is far superior to Adobe Acrobat.

For the record: I'm with Bob on this one.

the eula on my work copies of office all say the same thing. you cna install it on a personally owned pc as longas there is no chance of both pcs being used simultaneously.

Re: Electronic Version of 2005 NEC-problem solved

somewhere I acquired a copy of the 2002 nec pdf.

the search is nice. i don't think it came with folio anything. the acrobat reader search is adequate for me.

i wish the handbook came in pdf format.

Re: Electronic Version of 2005 NEC-problem solved

The 2005 electronic version uses a new version of the Folio search engine. It is far to the PDF version which is included. Copyright for MS office products vary, its usually one copy per machine, except MS Office Student and teacher, which can be installed on three machines, and is the lowest cost.

Re: Electronic Version of 2005 NEC-problem solved

So NFPA has put copy protection on the CD ROM which causes big hassles for legal users, but with the link provided, the copy protection is useless, since the CD can still be copied to a hard drive(s)
