Elevation of Garage outlets

I may be loosing it but,.... I always thought there was a minimum height requirement for all receptacles in a residential garage, due to the arcing when the power is utilized / plugged into.?? I can't seem to find it anywhere I look. We elevate all appliances or sources of ignition in a garage for that purpose. Any NEC code pro's got this off the top of their heads ???

AFAIK there is no NEC requirement except for commercial garages. But gas code says pilot light should be more than 18" from floor and electrical outlets would be nice above that level too.

I like 48" too but as mentioned there is not minimum height requirement.

When I first moved here everything was 48" but we changed that and now it is 43" to bottom for switches, kitchen receptacles, bathroom receptacles, and garages. Most counters are 36" so 43" works well. Same in a garage- workbench??? 36" so receptacle at 43".

There is no height requirement unless in a commercial garage as stated earlier.

I have had two inspectors tell me any wiring below 4' in an unfinished garage needed physical protection (stuff gets piled up)

There are places, San Francisco for one, that have a 8' rule for protecting cables and such in exposed/unfinished areas.


300.4(I) Add this section as follows:
(I) Subject to Physical Damage. Premises wiring systems installed less than 2.44 m (8 feet) above a walking surface or finished floor are considered subject to physical damage.
