I would stick with a Class L or J, but more importantly, you must CAREFULLY examine the coordination of all fuses particularly if you are supplying more than one elevator. You don't want a fault in an elevator circuit opening an upstream device when firefighters might need an elevator to get to a fire floor.

Cooper - Bussman has some good info on their website about protection and coordination. Also, check out this product.
