I have to install a new dedicated 120v circuit into an elevator room (it's being re-done) for the car lights. This is in a healthcare facility. I'm just wondering since I've never done this before, if I need to pipe it the whole way from the panel to the elevator room, or if I can run MC from the panel to outside the elevator room, and just pipe into the room?

Check your job specs, they may require a specific wiring method. Since you are not in a patient care area art. 517 should not apply. In our area the state inspectors who certify the elevator require a lockable means on the disconnect that feeds the cab lights or fans. good luck

Which should be located in the elevator/control room. Article 620.53. And the EI should be enforcing it too not just elevator inspectors. I think no matter what one of the 2 will catch and make sure of it.

So is there anything prohibiting me from running MC from the panel to outside the elevator room, then to a j-box and just piping into the room? I didn't see anything in the code prohibiting MC from being used but the elevator guys who are re-doing the system said I can run whatever I want to outside the room, then it has to be pipe in the room... I'm just wondering where it says in the code that everything in the elevator room has to be in pipe? There are no job specs on this.

There is no NEC code that says it has to be pipe "IN" the room.

Badabing, I would say you can run mc cable to a box outside the elevator equipment room

and then pipe ( EMT ) in side the room. The EI won't care if the room has pipe or not but

the Elev.Inps. will .
