I need to obtain 1 foot candle at floor level for emergency egress. How can I tell how many fixtures I'll need?

This is a very basic residential application in a long narrow hallway.

Thanks

Re: Emergency egress lighting level

you don't need 1 fc, you need an average of 1 footcandle with a min of 0.1 and a max to min ratio of 40:1

hard way: use lighting simulation software to model the space, obtain photometric files from manufacturer, and adjust fixture spacing to get the 1 fc average.

Easier way, go to manfacturer's catalog / web site. They normally have figured out the spacing for standard size corridors and mounting heights.

Easiest way, Lithonia ELM2 3' wide cooridor, mounted 7.5'AFF, should be spaced 25' center to center.

Also, you have to consider if your AHJ will really come by with his light meter at night.

BOCA actually requires 1 FC minimum. By residential, I guess you mean an apartment building or something similar?
