emergency generator yearly load testing

I have been approached by a contractor who has a 400 amp 480v generator connected to a small hospital in Fl. He has to run a yearly load test. He wants the original 400amp brkr removed and replaced by a new brkr. He has not showed me his loading device. The brkr is part of the generator and has the individual windings connected to the line and the load from the building to the load. Has anyone ran into this situation, I would assume the gen. manufacturer would have a kit for this.

I would say the gen is about 20 yrs old. he told me another system he did the contr just installed a nema 1 encl with a 400 amp brkr inside the gen where the original brkr was installed. he stated he connected the windings and load wires via 4" nipples thru the back of the enclosure.

1)How would a load testing device connect to the new brkr. I don't understand why he could not hook up to the original brkr. I will do just about anything for money but this makes no sense to me.

Me neither. I have couple of questions:

Is the existing CB malfunctioning and needs to be changed?

Is there something about the new CB that makes connecting the test load easier?

If sounds like we are only getting half the story.

Has this gone through AHCA or any local reveiw as far as code enforcement? You and the facility may be treading on thin ice (even in FL) altering this generator.

If in fact the manufacturer will bless this alteration for load banking, I would want the AHJ to also bless it and not have my name hanging out there for sole liability of a failure.

Hi,

At the hospital I work we test our generator every year, its a 937 Kva 277/480 4 wires y.

We first rent an stand-by generator on a trailer, disconnect ours and hook up the stand-by in case power goes out, then connect our to the load bank, very large unit
, it heats up the parking lot!, The circuit breaker is located in the load bank . we run it for 6 hours.
