Emergency Light at Hospitals

Re: Emergency Light at Hospitals

I think MC cable can be used per 517.30(C)(3) exception #5 (2002) - Flexible metal raceways and cable assemblies shall be permitted..... or where necessary for flexible connection to equipment.

Some might argue that since a light stays in place, a flexible connection isn't needed.

Steve, thanks for replying, I'm looking at 517.13(A), which it tells me that I could use AC cable but sec. 517.30(c)(3) it tells you that it has to be in raceway w/ exceptions. Why those two sections are different and how we could apply them?

Re: Emergency Light at Hospitals

Sam, these are two different issues. As far as the 517.13(A) portion of your post, go to the link below.

http://www.healthcareengineering.net/archive/receptacle/Article_from_RTT99_Launch.pdf

This would not have any bearing on Mechanical Protection of the emergency system.

Personally I don't think a "Fixture Whip" is intended to be prohibited in 517.30 and agree with Steve.

If you notice the wording in 517.30(C)(3) in the 99 and 05 NEC's you will also notice that it says, "where installed as branch circuits in patient care areas, the installation shall comply with the requirements of 517.13(A) and 517.13(B)". This would allow you to use HCFC, FMC, or any cable or raceway means recognized as an EGC per 250.118.

This wording was removed in the 2002 NEC, but has been reinstalled.
