I have seen emergency lighting done different ways and was wondering what the best or correct way was. Do you provide a seperate circuit for emergency lighting or can you use the same circuit as the room lighting is on?I looked in 700.17 (1) and if i understand it correctly then you need a seperate circuit. This would also allow you to check the battery life IE 90 MIN. CORRECT?

If you asking about self contained battery powered emergency lights you need to read 700.12(E) Unit equipment (2002 NEC, it may have moved in 2005)

The NEC calls those battery units "Unit Equipment" and they normally need to be on the same circuit as the lighting in that area, there are exceptions for large areas.
