Emergency lighting ckt

For emergency exit lighting in an apartment or business (exit sign above door). I was under the impression that it was required that you hook the emergency exit light to the lighting circuit to that area. I could not find the code reference I would appreciate help getting in the area of the NEC for this situation. In 700 i seen some info but I think that was more related to entire systems not the typical bug eye over the door with a battery inside.

Thanks It looks like 700.12(I)(2)(3)a&b hit the nail on the head in NFPA link 2020 version. I don't know why the unit equipment threw me off. Thanks again.
