CAN I USE 2 N.O. CONTACTORS WITH 1 COIL WIRED TO NORMAL POWER AND THE OTHER WIRED TO EMERGENCY SOURCE FOR AUTO TRANSFER SWITCH FOR LIGHTING
20 AMP CIRCUITS-- ELECTRICALLY INTERLOCKED ONLY
EMERGENCY POWER WILL ENERGIZE EMERGENCY CONTACTOR COIL - DOES IT HAVE TO BE MECH. HELD IN THE EMERGENCY POSITION?
I'M CONFUSED - THANKS

Re: EMERGENCY LIGHTING XSFER SWITCH

According to 700.3 all equipment shall be approved for use on emergency systems. It doesn't sound like your idea of rigging two contactors together would satisfy this requirement unless they were listed for that purpose.

Re: EMERGENCY LIGHTING XSFER SWITCH

This would be an old-timey, cheezy way to do it.

For real Life-Safety Emergency Lighting - go ahead & spring for a real mechanically-held automatic transfer switch.

Re: EMERGENCY LIGHTING XSFER SWITCH

The transfer switch has to be electrically operated and mechanically held. I believe that this applies to both the normal power position and the emergency power position.
