where can i find out what the standards are for emergency liting in a factory,i need to know if somewhere it says how many lites or luminaires per sq ft..

There Is Nothing In The Nec About Egress Illumination Lighting Levels, However If You Look In The International Building Code In Means Of Egress Illumination, It Will State That That The Level Of Illumination Shall Be Not Less Than 1 Foot-candle (11 Lux) At The Walking Surface. There Are Exps. Depending What Your Municipality Has Adopted For Local Codes You Might Be Able To Use The Ibc. Somebody Will Have To Calculate The Amount Of Fixtures To Accomplish The Lighting Level. As An Electrical Inspector You Are Usually Responsible For The Installation ( Nec Code Compliance) Not The Actual Lighting Level. In My Area The Building Official Will Use A Light Meter To Check Levels.

Someone has to determine where the means of egress are.

The 1 foot candle isn't normally required throughout an entire factory floor, but normally just in particular isleways or walkways.

Emergency lighting and egress lighting are two different things in the Code book. Even though we typically interchange the phrases.

Emergency lighting is an average of 1fc

Egress lighting is a minimum of 1fc

Egress lighting is for the path of travel out of the building with the building's normal power system working.

Even if the Code does not require lighting in the factory it might be a good idea to add some. There can be lots of hazards in a factory and to have the space suddenly go dark is not a situation I'd ever care to experience.
