I agree that the new wording with the addition of item (2) is terrible for the reason that you noted. I'm guessing that someone thought that an EMT connector does not meet the smoothly rounded edges part.
Nothing defining "how smooth" is required. Some are much smoother than others.
 
The product standard defines what is required for a listed fitting.
I was referring to when NEC says smooth they don't have any real guide for what is smooth enough. There are some fittings that have relatively smooth edges and some that will easily skin conductors during pulling operations, and there is some chance you can get smoother edges on RMC than some those fittings at times, yet RMC always requires a separate bushing fitting.
 
I always used bushings on threaded RMC or IMC but it always tickled me when the supply house went to get them and the 1/2" and 3/$' bushing box had 1/4" of dust from not being opened for ages
