I made a run of 3/4 emt that I 90'd off the ceiling, down 17inches, then had to offset to the wall to finish the run. the total length of the unsupported emt was 6' 7". The inspector said this was no good as the conduit out in the air like that needed to be supported closer together than 6' 7" according to the NEC. the local AHJ sticks to the NEC on conduit. I can't find it. could some one help? as far as I can see emt needs to be supported every 10' according to 358.30 A and/or B

Re: emt supports

You were looking in the right place, but need to read the whole paragraph. :)
358.30 (A) states, as you said, suports are required every 10'.
Also within 3' of an outlet box, junction box, device box, cabinet, conduit body, or other tubing termination.
Looks like you will need 2 supports unless you can use Exception No. 1

Re: emt supports

yeah i got that part there is a box on the ceiling and a support 14" from there. also one where the conduit comes back to the wall 6'7" from the end with the box it is the part of the conduit that is away from the ceiling and then offset back to the wall he has a problem with however there is a plenum, 2 4" chilled water lines and a 3" sprinkler line all crambed onto the wall at the ceiling level. He said somethiing about required supports with the conduit away from the wall out in the open like it is. lol I just don't see what else to do about it. and don't see anything about supports due to a particular routing except for about suspended ceilings. this is in an air handler room in a high rise structure.
