when conduit leaves an enclosed spray booth out of the top do you have to install a seal there before it enters a box? this is a self contained unit and the cables for the lights will penetrate the top. as long as the box is more than 3ft. from any opening is it ok for it to be a regular 4 square box with emt conduit feeding the lights

Most of the spray booths I've seen are automated, and have a robot that does the painting. So in these spray booths, conduits are a necessity.

I seem to recall there are spray booths, spray rooms, spray areas, and maybe even a couple of different flavors. Are you sure you have a "booth"?

I would suggest you take the time to go through NFPA 33, and NEC chapter 5 including 516.

Art 516 refers one back to Art 501 for Class 1 location wiring methods.
Take a look at 501.15(A)(1) & (A)(4). This may help you.

There are many types of spray booths, from the manufactured types to the homemade types. Some come from the factory standardized and others can be more complicated in regards to the wiring. So, it is difficult by your explanation to give specific details.

If your wiring environment matches 516.3(C)(4)for enclosed spray booths the space within 3 feet in all directions from any openings must be classified as Cl 1, Div 2, Class 1 Zone 2, or Class 2 Div 2 as shown in the figure 516.3(B)(4) [NFPA 33:6.5.4]
I would classify the space as Class 1 Division 1 if it were my call. See 501.15(A)(4) which permits seals on either side of the boundary within 10 feet (one length of ridgid conduit).:)

You have to stop right now and read article 516, it's only 5 pages . You need to wire this

Class 1or Class 2 Division 2 location per article 500.

4" sq boxes, no
emt, no
cables for lights, no

A spray booth is nothing but a bomb waiting for a spark.
 
Maybe I'm lazy, or just practical, but I'd probably put a sealoff there anyhow because it takes more intellectual effort to determine if you actually need one than the sealoff costs. What's a 3/4" sealoff cost? 15-20 bucks?
