My favorite clients to work for are the electrical contractors. The new clients I work for are usually referrals from the EC's.

may i ask what services you provide to the EC's? Do they come to you with projects from developers and you provide them with a design?

I only ask because in a few years i plan to start my own venture and getting work from the beginning is going to be priority #1. I would love to continue in water and wastewater but I have a feeling i may have to initially accept peanuts from developers to keep the engines running, until I am able to convince primes to use me.

To add to this, what is the best way to obtain work from EC's? Just cold call and inform them of the services you can provide?

I would think they would need calculations work such as short circuit/load flow, coordination etc. I wouldn't think they would actually spend money and hire for design services like drawings/specs. Unless they have no choice.

I have ETAP and can provide the calc. services just not sure how to go about it with the EC's.

Find projects with upgrades that require updates to short circuit studies and then get the plan holders from bid sync or some other solicitation aggregation site. Contact the plan holders to find out what EC's they are getting bids from. Contact the EC's to discuss business. Study the specs very closely to be sure you understand the scope of the study (what equipment must be studied, sometimes existing stuff needs updating)

Usually the specs will require ETAP or SKM. The owner furnishes the existing study file and the contractor updates it based on the new configuration. Sometimes the mfr of electrical gear will update the study. I know Eaton has an engineering services arm that does this. Can't speak to GE, Rockwell, or SQD.

I usually get hired by a contractor when he finds he needs permit drawings for a job he already has. Other times they need our services are when they need some advice on an important decision, like a service or generator size or dealing with troublesome existing conditions.

Another service we offer is a short-circuit and arc-flash study.

If you want to work in the water-and-wastewater field, cultivate your relationships with civil engineers.

Oh I am in computer engineering and I am always wondering how many different fields there are in civil as I have a lot of friends in civil engineering and they are like doing all sorts of things and work. From building architectures to wastewater pipeline. Is there anymore cool stuff that civil engineering people do?
