I want to install an outdoor junction box. If I land a 2" PVC conduit on the top of the junction box do I have to use a hub to connect my 2" PVC MA or can I just use the 2" PVC MA?

I agree with Tom Baker about using a Myers-Hub when you are trying to keep equipment water-proof.
Let me give you an example of how we would keep water out of our equipment coming into a junction box. We would bring the conduit down to the side of the box, and install a condulet tee. We then would go into the box at the bottom of the box and also at the bottom of the tee, we would install a listed drain fitting to drain any water that might get into your conduit system. Having worked in one of the largest Waste Water Treatment plants in the country, we found that this was a good way of keeping water out of our electrical equipment. I wish that I could show this arrangement with a picture, then it would be easier to understand.

A Meyers hub will certainly do the job.

In my opinion it is overkill with PVC pipe.

You could use an O-ring seal, like those found on liquid tight connectors, you could use a sealing locknut.

I think Fribels suggestion of coming down beside the box and entering on the side with a conduit body below the live parts is good suggestion.

No matter what sealing method is used it is never as good as leaving the top of a rain tight enclosure solid. :)

GC

Are you using a pvc box or a metal box,A pvc box with hubs can be glued together and be water tight. If pvc box I agree with IWIRE use a sealing locknut.

I have learned the hard way that you most definitely need to drill a drain hole in the bottom of an outdoor enclosure. The hole can be 3/32 to 3/16 of an inch for an enclosure that is not explosionproof. Some 3R enclosures have a lid that fits such that water will only fill 1/2 an inch deep but do you really want even that?

I can guarantee you that an enclosure without a drain will fill with water. Depends on when God goes after it with a pressure washer. Sanitation people in food plants also do that. They will deliberately fill a light fixture with water because their jobs are so boring and disgusting.

To: mc5w, the one thing that I have learned, when you drill a drain hole in the bottom of your box to drain water out, it will allow "bees" to enter the box. That is why I would suggest using a Listed drain fitting, like a Crouse-Hinds drain fitting.
