Is there a code referance as to putting seu and ser cable in pvc conduit on the outside of a building? Or is this just my local inspectors rule you can not? he did not give me a referance other than Standard trade practice is to do this but I can not
Thanks guys

is the cable subject to any physical damage if it is not in a conduit??

any windows or doors close to it???

is it on a service, feeder, or branch circuit??

Maybe it would be easier to answer your ? if you gave a few more details...

specified in Table 1, Chapter 9.

Cables shall be permitted to be installed where such use
is not prohibited by the respective cable articles.
The number
of cables shall not exceed the allowable percentage fill
specified in Table 1, Chapter 9.

Sorry about the details
100 amp overhead residental service i asked if they required it to be in conduit and he said NO then he said NOT to use underground wire in the conduit ABOVE the meter---Not approved so I said i would just use se cable. He said that was ok then on the permit it said SE CABLE NOT TO BE INSTALLED IN CONDUIT This service will require a disco so after it I will have to go to the attic and over to the panel.
I HATE to see cable strung on the side of the house this way so most of the jobs i do I put it in pvc conduit so it looks nice, Never had a issue before . Will call him in the am to verify this Just wanted to know if I have been doing it wrong or if it is a local issue .havent worked in this town and went to get the permit so I was treated like a guy who has never wired before when he seen I was licenced he started on this thing "WE DO IN THE TRADE THAT IS NOT RIGHT" like underground wire in conduit above the meter??? so he gave me the permit and some paper to read what things he does not want to see when he inspects. I HATE:mad: when code is not enough
2008 code by the way

Perhaps "underground wire" for him is USE which has very limited above ground acceptance{338.12(B)} and does have a nasty habit of showing up in risers.
Also, if you are placing SE in conduit, you might keep in mind Note 9 to Table 9 (pg 671-'08) as, if the inspector cares to enforce it, you would need a larger conduit than what was necessary for (3) XHHW or THWN conductors.
But, since you are not a guy who has never wired, I'm sure you know all that.

Seu

Seu

Most inspectors around here will not accept SEU in conduit if capped on both ends like weatherhead on one end, meter on other. They say cable is not rated for that application ( exterior ) if POCO requires seperation between mast and meter you can run SEU also no URD from load side of meter to panel. The SEU usually requires no additional protection if location is green space/yard unless there is a sidewalk

Well they are wrong to do so as the NEC allows it. See 3XX.22 of each conduit and tubing article.
