Generally speaking you never use a conductor that is intenionally grounded at the service equipment to normally non current carrying metal parts once you are down stream from the main.
It is permissable per 250.142 (restrictive language) but you need to read that section very carefully.
NEC 250 Sec VI (250.110 + ) states what equipment must be grounded. 250.118 identifies "grounding conductors" which may also be your conduit and not necessarily a "seperate" conductor.
