I know there is a code section but could not find it but where does it indicate how far something can protrude in front of another piece of equipment. example a wireway below a set of panelboards, the wireway is 8X8 and extends 2" beyond the panel, I believe in this application this is acceptable and I thought something could not extend more than 8" but cannot find this requirement the reason this has come up is there is a disconnect for a transformer that is mounted above the transformer, apparently there is no wall space (I have not seen this yet) but I believe this would be a violation as the disc is approx. 8" deep however the far is held 6" off the wall and 20" deep.. thanks..

110.26(A)(3) permits associated equipment with the electrical installation to project no more than 6" beyond the front of the equipment.

I would assume this if for equipment located below other electrical equipment like in the example I indicated however we see transformers located above panels all the time within the panel working space and well beyon the 6" typically above the panel would be acceptable? We do this all the time and have never been called out on it just curious what your thoughts would be on a xfmr above a panel either mounted to the wall or suspended from above..

Provided that the transformer is installed above the required headroom then you would be OK to have the transformer located there.

Well i agree with all the post its a common issue most jobs have a spec by engineer called out mechanical head room at 8 foot please check you spec book also with your electrical code.

I have seen many installations where the electrician had to be clever in his installation, to make all of the equipment fit and still provide for code compliancy.
Most will generally 'build out' the equipment so there is no more than 6" of protrusion of other equipment such as transformers.
