Equipment located under raised floor

Article 645 lists cables and receptacles as being allowed under a raised floor if the list of conditions are met. I have a specialized situation where some European equipment is being installed in the room, and a disconnecting means is desired under the raised floor.

In other sections of the code, disconnecting means are allowed to be at the equipment, in not easilly accessable locations.

I have never seen any equipment under a raised floor. I wonder if this question has ever come up concerning busway with plug in units. (similar to my application)

Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

Relationship between 645 and rest of code

Relationship between 645 and rest of code

Thanks for the pointer to 300.22c, I had not looked there. Cut and dry - No plug in bus duct.

It seems that article 645 ALLOWS you to use methods otherwise banned by other sections. (see the wording in 300.22.D wiring permitted to be in accordance with art 645) So first, the general provisions of the NEC apply, next article 645 can be used to relax the types of cords and cables & wiring allowed.

So if 300.22.C.2 allows metal enclosed equipment, and 645 makes no mention of it, then a disconnect switch would be legal.

Horizontal position

Horizontal position

I saw the section 240.33 about vertical position. This is one place where the handbook explaination really doesn't match the code paragraph before it.

Code states: " ... shall be mounted in a vertical position unless it is shown to be impractable."

Explaination specifically prohibits breaker from being mounted on it's back. What about the "shown to be impractable" part ?

We may be able to mount this switch on it's side to get away from this issue. Furthermore, It's a non-fusible switch, not an overcurrent device.

JP,
Your analysis of the relationship between 300.22 and 645 is correct in that 300.22 is the general rule, unless able to provide the prerequisites of 645.4 then you are able to use the more relaxed rules of 645 that modify other parts of the code.

So if you can put the disconenct, how will you feed in and out?

how to mount the disconnect

how to mount the disconnect

Since we can't mount it on it's back, I think mounting on it's side with line and load coming out of each end.
