Your on the right track. I think 2 grand isn't even going to cover the cost of the equipment and wire your going to need. Talk to the inspector and see what he will allow.
I had an instructor in college. He said the favor you did for your brother in law was the one that will tie you up for 6 months and cost you dearly, legally, and professionally.
Put a plan together. Itemize. Communicate. Its not fair if you rip into your friends service and find that the inspector is looking for a reason to clean up his mistakes for the last 5 years in letting this go on. Keep your emotions under wraps and make dollar and sense decisions. If you blow this you might not be able to help the next customer that really needs it.

I thank you for your comments and comments from others, and I will take them in stride.....

Now for some comments not directed at any one person...

You know in truth, I should have never mentioned the money. You'd think I would learn by now, because every time I mention local cost I get bomb barded with folks who operat in apparent different circumstances. When have you heard me trying to make sarcastic comments on the prices others charge? OH maybe I have...:D Actually ..None of my business....although educational......I have said it before, I dont live in a large town, I dont have the overhead that alot of you have and I live very comfortably, and frankly am happy as a lark....This thread was intended to ask for comments reguarding my assesment of adding circuits in the midst of all these violations. I have recieved good healthy comments reguarding my intentions and for that I'm gratefull.

Alright Mr. Encourager....you ask for it....I believe you don't have a clue about my market, AND you don't have a clue about my thoughts.

....as he posts a thread on the internet for all to read. ;)

one of the great things about these forums is that the answers are almost never personal....they are harsh, aggressive and to the point...they may or may not be accurate...you may or may not like them...but they will almost always cause you to think long and hard, and look within....and typically be of more use that the nice-nice answers you'll typically get from people who know you and don't want to hurt your feelings...

Add in the fact that most of us have nothing to gain and are here on our free time.

that sounds much better than saying that we have no place else to go,....i like your way better:D

I read post on this forum of rates of everything from $45 to $145. My son lives in the Washington DC area and I cant believe the difference in housing cost and wages. And I just wished everyone could respect that truth.

Here I go talking about money again...I bid a job today.....for $9000, my direct material cost were $4000, with 2x40 man hours of labor...... then the customer volunteered the other bid of $10500 from IMO a highly respected EC. This contractor is the largest EC in town, and Im among the smallest, And I believe I will make way more money on the job than he will at our respective bids. Now is any one wrong, I dont think so IMO

nope...just depends on how you look at it...you may make $3000 in your labor and profit for the week....after paying material, help, OH, ect...the other EC may make $2000 (since he is paying an additional employee, you are paying yourself)...

but, you will only be able to do that job for the week....he may have 4 other trucks doing similar jobs, so he'll make $10,000 for the week...

don't know what the real facts are, but that's one scenerio...

Oh...he's got more trucks than that..

My point is if one of you larger EC's bid a simular job in, lets say NJ or NYC your bid would probably be at least 30-40% higher or more. AND if you read about me doing the job on this forum and I mentioned the price, you would be shocked....

I talked this customer very briefly today on the phone, and I told him that in "good concious" I could not do the work with the existing code issues at hand. And, I would like to encourage him to build a new service, and if he would consider the 2grand price range, I would happy to figure it for him, but only after I personaly walked him through the reasons, and he said "Ok" lets talk.

Talked more in depth today about 2000 to 2500 bucks, He said figure it up, and let's move forward......he wants that hot tub pretty bad...ha
