EV Charger location

Where are the charging ports on EV's typically located are they in the front of the vehicle?

Depends on the manufacturer, I’ve seen some about 8”x 12”, others much larger. Not really a whole lot to them. They just turn the power off and on, and the EV tells it what to do. Fancier ones are Internet connected.

Does a Ford take a different one then Chevy? Yes, I'm ignorant.
I know Tesla uses an adapter, but I think everybody else uses the standard plug on the vehicle. With Tesla, you must plug the adapter into the cord first, then into the car, or it will not charge. Something about the initial hand shake that takes place when plugged in. The car doesn’t “See” the charger.

Definitely varies across vehicles. As commented the Leaf's is the front middle, the Chevy Bolt is by the driver's side mirror, apparently the same for the Ford F-150 Lightning, Tesla puts theirs on the driver's side rear, and I don't know about all the others.

So it makes it hard to lay out an EVSE in a garage in a brand agnostic way. Particularly if you want to be able to charge an EV in the driveway or pulled into the garage.

Do you want to pull in or back in? Elon put his port near the back of the car, most everyone else near the front. The ones in the front are either driver’s side or in the grille. The Tesla model 3 & Y is on the driver’s side, rear. Model X & S near the left tail light. Older roadsters have it on the passenger side.

EVSEs mostly have 20’ cables, but some up to 25’.

Every EV sold in the US has a J1772 connector except Tesla. But Teslas are currently sold with an adapter so they can be charged with a “standard” EVSE.

Many EVs come with a portable EVSE. Most plug into a NEMA 14-50 or 5-15. The 120V scenario is too slow for many users.

Installing near the garage door is useful in case you have an issue (like the Bolt recall) where you need to charge outside the garage. But it may require you to back in to charge in the garage.
