I have a customer called me today, owns a gas station. Is re grading his parking lot wants to run conduit for 3 future ev charging stations. I have never done a charging station before. I was wondering would I be safe if I ran 2 conduits per station back to his store for the future or should I rough in a service and disconnect location near them. ?

He really needs to give you some idea of what chargers he is looking at...some of the larger chargers require very large circuits. The larger level 2 chargers can require a 100 amp circuit and the DC fast chargers require a 100 to 500 amp, 3 phase, 480 volt circuit.

Gas stations are usually 200-400 amp services, so if they are looking at three, probably will not be worth your time to feed them from the station, even if they are just Level 2. I did a level 2 DC at a gas station, 200 amp single phase service just for it. If they think there is enough market for three charging stations, they probably will eventually go with the larger fast chargers.

Not sure where you are located but some POCO municipalities require you to qualify for EV in there area. The comments above are correct. You cant install these EV charges before considering sizes. If the existing service cant handle the new load its not going to work. Most of the EVs we have installed require a lot of planning. These things arent cheap so the infrastructure needs to be in place. The EV charge vendor has final say if it gets installed/ commissioned or not in some cases

Thank you for the reply’s. The info I was giving was very vague. There would be an engineer attached for future install. Customer was trying to install conduit while he was regrading parking lot. His service would have to be upgraded unless AHJ or PICO allows him to install new service on different part of property. I was curious to see if it was something we could do for him this way he didn’t have to re-dig for conduit and grounds.
