Exaust fan

Today I came across a kitchen exaust fan. I think it's pretty old. It has two hot switched 120 volt wires to it plus a neutral. One switch turns the fan on and the other turns it on high speed. Why does the second hot wire from the same power leg make the fan run faster?

Simply a 2 speed fan.Thats how they work,just basic motor

Thanks for reply. I had always seen speed control built into in the switch not in the motor windings.
