My guess is no ladder in the hole, looks like it might be deep enough to required sloping or shoring/trench box (non present), being under the building might be considered confined space, no harness, no hoist, no compentant person.

Just looks bad.

It looks to me like the depth of trench could be about two feet. If that is the case, nothing would be required. As to the confined space, I believe the harness and hoist are not requirements in construction (OSHA 1926) but are requirements of Industry (OSHA 1910)

Get someone else to do it, it would be more cost effective, by having someone that does this all the time. It would free you or your skilled guys up to other more productive things.

I have to dig a 30' long 36" deep 18" wide trench. Also a 50' long 36" deep 12" wide trench. What size excavator would you recommend. The Soil is not too rocky, nothing extreme is expected. I am hoping to have all the excavating done in one day, but if two is necessary that's not a big deal.

I typically rent from Sunbelt and Nations Rent, is a 2,000LB HYDRAULIC COMPACT EXCAVATOR ok for something small like that?

Call Chris. Al can do it.

for most trenches we hand dig. biggest one i dug was about 150 - 200 feet by 2 feet deep by hand. it was for a generator they wanted in the front yard and there was phones and utility lines everywhere

You sure don't want to dig it by hand in north Georgia, hard clay, and on the east side of Atlanta, theres this little rock called Stone Mountain! Stretches for miles just below the surface!

That mini would work fine, the one with the blade on the front. Stack your dirt as near the hole as you can without filling it back in. Then level the bucket to the ground and push the dirt back in the hole to back fill. Once you get most of it in then take the blade and push the scrapings back in. Tamp with the bucket when done. If you just can't get it back filled call for a little bobcat(front end loader) and have them pick up the mini at the same time : )

I ve seen other pictures of Al's work, Chris send him over, he's hired.

I actually need to excavate 1 or 2 yards of dirt and build a small retaining wall. I will have to get the mini excavator and a small bobcat. It will be a fun filled day!!!

As for the guy that said farm it out and get your guys doing something productive, I agree, but this a project for the wife's, new business. It will keep her out of the house.
