Exhuast Fans

I have a bunch of exhuast fans I am estimating. They show toggle switch nect to the unbit on the drawings indicated as a "St" and shown on the electrical symbol list as a motor control toggle switch. I tried looking in the spec and on the manufacturers website but don't have a clear answer. Is this a seperate switch that we mount or is it part of the unit. I was under the impression that we run power to the switch and whip to the unit but I have a feeling that is not correct.

On all the exhaust fans that we have done ,we had a disconnecting means right beside the fan, which sometimes it was just a switch
 
It is a motor starter switch. It has overloads in it which come in different sizes depending on your motors. It does not come with the fan ,you buy it.
 
St means a switch with thermal overload protection. A pretty common sight on commercial jobs.
 
SMS is how we show a manual starter with overloads. Overloads sized to motor nameplate data.

Used a lot on exhaust fans for large rest rooms, hot water circulation pumps, etc.
