I had a customer call me about repairing the UF cable that feeds a GFCI that his pool pump is plugged into. This cable was cut during a room addition. The pump is bonded to a ground rod at the receptacle.

Question: ?How do I best repair this break??

Re: Existing Installation

They make an underground splice kit for UF, so that part of the repair should be easy. Any supply house or even Home Depot/Lowes should have one. Why is the pump bonded to a ground rod? Sounds like somebody needs to review article 680.

Re: Existing Installation

I guess my question was more along the lines of "can a repair to this be made without violating Article 680.21(A)?"

Edited for wrong reference.

Re: Existing Installation

First I think we need to establish the fact that 680.21 wasn't violated with the original installation. Just to avoid the old saying "Two wrongs don't make a right" (or something like that) :)

Re: Existing Installation

Write on the invoice "repaired broken UF cable to remote yard receptacle". It's not a pool receptacle if they've got pump put inside for the winter. :D

Re: Existing Installation

The CMP does not feel the EGC is protected in the cable wiring method, however it is allowed inside the building. In washington state NM and UF can be used as the state rule modify the NEC.
