Exit and Egress Lighting

Do you find that Exit and Egress Lighting is covered by Article 700 or 701.
701.10 seems to permit comingling of circuitry but 700.9 doesn't.
If they changed, those sections are from NEC-2002
 
Exit and egress lighting are typically required to be fed from an emergency power source, not a legally required standby source.

This requirement comes from the building codes.

If you are under the IBC take a look at 2006 IBC section 2702.2.3 for exit signs and 2702.2.4 for means of egress lighting. Both sections require emergency power.

I agree that they say "Emergency power shall be provided ...."
Is emergency power defined as Emergency Systems (700) or Legally Required Standby Systems (701).
Both cover illumination within their scope.
 
If you put any stock in the NEC handbook, they seem to indicate it would be a article 700 Emergency system. For example:

"Legally required systems must be able to supply standby power in 60 seconds or less, instead of the 10 seconds or less required for emergency systems."

I'm not sure why, but I always thought exit and egress lighting had to activate in 10 seconds, so I would say they are emergency systems.

Also, the handbook says;

"Article 700 does not dicatate whether emergency systems are required or where emergency or exit lights should be located. These determinations may be made by using the NFPA 101"

IMO, its emergency lighting. NFPA 101 says:

7.9.2.2​

New emergency power systems for emergency lighting shall be at least Type 10, Class
1.5, Level 1, in accordance with NFPA 110, Standard for Emergency and Standby Power​

Systems.

And NFPA 110 says:

4.4.1*​

Level 1 systems shall be installed when failure of the equipment to perform could result​

in loss of human life or serious injuries.

Emergency power would be an Article 700 installation.

Here is a quote from the scope of Article 700.

Emergency systems are those systems legally required and classed as emergency by municipal, state, federal, or other codes, or by any governmental agency having jurisdiction. These systems are intended to automatically supply illumination, power, or both, to designated areas and equipment in the event of failure of the normal supply or in the event of accident to elements of a system intended to supply, distribute, and control power and illumination essential for safety to human life.

So if the governmental agency having jurisdiction classes the exit and egress lighting as "emergency" then it must comply with Article 700.

The 2006 IBC classifies exit sign and means of egress lighting as requiring "emergency power".

And for systems such as accessible means of egress elevators and smoke control the IBC only requires standby power.
