Explosion Proof Motors

I double-checked the cat. sheets and the website. They do say that their C1D1 motors are "built to contain an explosion inside and not propagate it into the surrounding atmosphere".

My inclination would be to just add a seal and be done with it.

That statement would be true with or without the "potting". What it does is acknowledge that an internal explosion is possible. Truthfully, it isn't likely, but it is possible.

The basic rule covering marking for factory seals is Section 501.15(A)(1)(1) Exception c. Note it requires the enclosure to be marked "factory sealed" or equivalent. Without such marking, there is no assurance that it is (sales literature notwithstanding).

An explosion proof switch box is built to do the same thing but you still must have a seal within 18" in any conduit entries. It all comes down to whether or not the seal between motor and motor wiring box is intended to be an explosion proof seal, and maybe even if there is any arc producing components during normal operation within the motor to begin with.

They also say they use "longer rabbit feeds", but I'm pretty sure that's not what they meant.
