Code Question

Typically when adding another panel I’ve seen where a parallel service is ran and service increased to 400A split at the meter. I’ve also seen a sub panel added to an existing panel.

Have you ever seen an existing 42 breaker panel with the SER CABLE coming in at the top of the panel to a main breaker then at the bottom SER cable connected to the bottom via lugs extending to another panel? A panel extension if you will.

Assume it can handle the load, can you do this?

In the respect of a 200 amp main breaker panel with feed through lugs that then continues on to feed a 200 amp panel, I’ve seen it used and have used it where the original panel is a 3R panel located outside of house, then (using the feed through lugs) feeds the 200 amp (sub) panel inside the house.

The outside panel main breaker acts as the building disconnect (satisfying 2020 NEC) and is the service point where neutral is bonded. I’ll usually use an 8/16 panel that has extra spots to conveniently feed an A/C condensing unit, or a separate outbuilding.

The inside 200 amp panel is a sub-panel and is fed with a 4-wire feeder.
