Extending dryer circuit

Is it ok to extend a dryer's individual branch circuit by converting the existing receptacle box into a j-box and splicing the additional wire needed to feed a new receptacle 20 feet away? Or should a new continuous wire be run all the way back to the panel? I've seached the NEC '96 (newest one I have) and can find no reason that this can't be done. If I missed something please point it out to me. Thanks in advance for your help.

Re: Extending dryer circuit

The Code does not prohibit this installation if Article 370 from the 1996 NEC (assuming that is the one that is current in your area) is complied with. :D

Re: Extending dryer circuit

This is perhaps a debatable question. Is it s three wire or four wire dryer circuit you are extending.

Some would interpret code to say that a three wire cannot be extended, but that a four wire circuit could be.

Re: Extending dryer circuit

I agree with you Bob, this is a debatable question. IMO though, this is an existing installation and extending the circuit by 20 feet does not change it to a new installation. :D

Re: Extending dryer circuit

The existing circuit is in fact already a four wire run. I am just wanting to add 20 feet of the exact same kind of wire to be able to relocate the dryer and make use of the perfectly good wire that's already run to the current receptacle. Thank you all for your replys. They are very much appreciated.

Re: Extending dryer circuit

u didnt mention the wire size and distance of the org. circuit... are you changing the single gang receptacle box to a larger jbox?

Re: Extending dryer circuit

The wire size is 10awg and the total run (with the new extension) will be roughly 45 feet. Existing box is a 4x4 so when I remove device it should meet fill calcs. Thanks again for the help.
