Extension rings

I need to find this in the code book. We have a QC on our job who says this is against code.
He's mistaken

I have never herad that you could not,
That is because you can and the rings themselves are manufactured so you can

I just don't see why you can't.
You are right

I have been unable to find it in the NEC.
That's because it is not specifically worded anywhere in the code but neither is what screw driver should be used to tighten a common point/phillips head combo screw.

He Also says we are not allowed to use them on new construction. I would appreciate any help on this, Thanks.
Have him back up his claim by showing you where it is stated they can't be used for new construction

In the mean time, here is is one example of 314.22 and the use of an extension ring.

Roger,

Neither for the Robertson/Phillips/Slot head combo screw.
I will have to remember to quote you, next time.

Very Nicely stated. :)

There are two extension ring concepts going in this thread.

First, I agree with Roger that one can run metallic raceway to and from an extension ring and have the EGC continuity established by the mechanical connections. Also, I agree that the Code says nothing to prohibit the use of extension rings.

But, the photo 480 (Ken) introduced showing the stack of extension rings between two standard boxes has a possible problem. Sameguy describes how he held the assembly together, here.
see the empty conn. on the bottom, I ran a pipe from the back of the orig. box inside and is held by that conn. after I cut the thread part of making it like a coupling. hehe
This is certainly an inventive, creative way to make the assembly, but I think a claim that 250.4(A)(3) and 250.4(A)(5) might be made, depending upon the situation.

Now, if a bonding jumper were installed inside that extension ring tower, between a ground screw in the top box and a ground screw in the bottom box, then I don't see a problem.
