Under the provisions of the 2006 International Building Code, exterior landings shall be provided with emergency illumination with battery back up lighting. How are most contractors dealing with the requirement. Does a remote fixture from the emergency light fixture instead meet the requirement. Does the battery pack need to be increased to cover the additional wattage served? I have not seen any yet and am curious what is being used.

In about 90% of the installations that I do, the outside egress light is a 6V unit fed from an interior exit/emergency light. The unit that is installed to feed the remote head is ordered with an extra VA battery to maintain light for the required 90 min.

Keep in mind that the circuit supplying the unit equipment must be the same circuit that servers the normal lighting in the area. So the unit equipment for the exterior landing EM light must be fed by the same circuit that feeds the normal exterior lighting.

Take a look at 700.12(F) (specifically the last paragraph)
