Re: Extremely Longwinded Hot Tub Issue

Roger and Bob
Both of you are correct in your statements. I do understand that everything on the market today is not listed. Some of the straps are not listed along with other items.

The show cases that I am talking about a company in Slier City built them. They used the components out of a four tube fixture to build the lighting with. The secondary conductors are installed in clear rubber tubing and are cord and plug connected between show cases.
410.29 (E) Secondary Circuit(s). Where showcases are cord-connected, the secondary circuit(s) of each electric-discharge lighting ballast shall be limited to one showcase.
Here is a good example of the lifting of the listing and labeling by a third party on a piece of equipment. Should this be lifted then the only thing that the manufacture would need is find an inspector that is crossed trained and does not know the code to sign off and it is now approved.

Again I stand on the grounds that if it is to be installed In My Opinion it needs a third party listing.

The way the proposal is written for NC, it will leave the approval up to the manufacture, a PE or the inspector. The code will take a step backwards.

Re: Extremely Longwinded Hot Tub Issue

Mike maybe I have been misunderstanding this thread.

Currently NC requires this?

? 66‑25. Acceptable listings as to safety of goods.

All electrical materials, devices, appliances, and equipment shall be evaluated for safety and suitability for intended use. This evaluation shall be conducted in accordance with nationally recognized standards and shall be conducted by a qualified testing laboratory.....
That is an incredibly broad rule.

Equipment. A general term including material, fittings, devices, appliances, luminaires (fixtures), apparatus, and the like used as a part of, or in connection with, an electrical installation.
So today in NC you can not install motors or unistrut or grounding screws or jack chain or some types of FMC etc?

The rule must be largely ignored.

I can tell you we do not have such a requirement in my area and the sky is not falling. :)

I think that rule should be dropped like a bad habit. :D

Re: Extremely Longwinded Hot Tub Issue

The State of TN has a law similar to the NC law.
Over the years, its been suprising how many equipment mfgs. when notied their equipment must carry a NRTL sticker state "Oh! You are one of those", then proceed to make changes in design or components before obtaining a label. Some mfg definitely put out two standards, one which can be approved, one which can't.

Re: Extremely Longwinded Hot Tub Issue

There are some disadvantages to having a lot of pictures on different CDs. I have a picture of a knitting machine that I can?t find that I wanted to post in this thread. This machine came here from across the big blue lake.

The thing that I wanted to point out in the picture was the start and stop buttons. In order to start or stop the piece of equipment the operator was required to open the control panel. There were no external controls on the equipment.

I have a picture of a portable saw setup. This piece of equipment has saws that trim the ends off and routers that cut a tongue on one end and a groove on the other end. The name plate calls for a 30 amp 240 volt three phase circuit. This piece of equipment came with a 16 gauge three wire cord and a three wire twist-lock and no equipment grounding conductor.

Both pieces of equipment were installed and in operation.

I got these pictures a couple of years back and don?t remember where I got them. Maybe I downloaded them form Joe Tedesco?s site. I will keep looking and maybe I will find them. They are a good example of unlisted equipment that has been installed.
