Re: Fall Protection

OSHA still does not require the use of harnesses on most portable ladders and the real reason is that in many cases it is physically impossible to use a harness when on a portable ladder. How would you use one when using a step ladder to get to a light fixture on a 15' drywall ceiling? How would you use one when using a straight or extension ladder to get to a light fixture mounted 20' up on a 40' tall wall?
1926.500(a)(2)(vii)
Requirements relating to fall protection for employees working on stairways and ladders are provided in subpart X of this part.
There is nothing in subpart X to require the use of fall protection when portable ladders are being used.

Here is a 2002 letter of interpretation.

I have been taught that the purpose of a saftey harness is to save your life. Not to keep you from getting hurt. If you need to use one, you will need medical attention.

I agree with don but I read some up on this myself, and OSHA will back any employer who has more strict standards. Their rules are stated as a minimum, so if you want to file a grevence with the labor board for having to wear one, give up. OSHA will back the more restrictive rules.
