I have job installing two fans under a deck. The customer is installing the TimberTech,DrySpace. The instructions mention installing a weatherproof box, surface mount under the ceiling.

I'm looking for a weatherproof fan rated box. Who makes one?

Thanks

I doubt that there is such a thing as a weather proof fan rated box.

I would make sure that the Ceiling Fans are UL listed for outdoor /damp location other wise you would not be able to install the fan and meet Code.

I run into this may time and have to tell customer that the cheapy big box store brand Fan they bought can not be installed out side unless it is listed for Outdoor use/Damp location use.

410.4 all Luminares (fixtures) installed in wet and damp, locations shall be marked, " suitable for wet locations or suitable for damp locations"
see article 100 for defintions of location, dry and location damp, wet

Did you see this?

It got me thinking....put ANY weatherproof box you want in, and lag bolt the fan's back plate to the beam ....yes/no/maybe?

If you can seal the hole around the wiring, why not the joist pan?

I do have fan rated pan boxes that I could use. I could seal the hole without too much trouble.

The instructions do tell us to install the DrySpace "V" panel above the fan area so the fan box should be dry.

There are quite a few Damp/Wet rated Fans.

I have had to pipe entirely in pvc to pvc box on outside decks where it was not covered above. I have never seen a good install solution (though I'm sure it's out there somewhere. Products today amaze me sometimes.) The difficulty I have seen in the past is finding a weather proof box large enough for the canopy not to collect water. If I recall, we would nail in a 2x10 flat to mount the box to and allow it to act as a sheild.

I get a call into local inspector, and suggest a round shallow metal Cast Box, its not rated/code and it has four(4) attachments points, and 4 device
screws. Of course it's look real good with pipe and prime it before U put it
up, let the home owner paint it to suit, manufactures usually suggest a paint to match/ touch up, AKA use. Metal on Metal ...

Norb,
maybe it might be best to simply ask the manufac. what box they use?...

I just sent a note to TimberTech and I'm curious as to the answer I will receive. I asked what type of weatherproof box they suggest that is "fan rated".

I do not believe that either of those two boxes are fan rated. I am pretty sure it would be stated as so with the documentation.

Must have been late when I posted those links....there ARE pdfs on the linked pages ~ no mention of fan support.

documentation states they are good for making junctions; no mention of ANY fixture support, yet you can purchase them in an outdoor flood combo kit. and i haven't had one fall; yet. :D just fasten it well.

Those boxes are listed for fixture installations. I did not see any reference to fan installations. If fans are installed, and they do not fall immediately, that is just good fortune.
What happens in a season or two or three when the torque of the fan running finally causes the fan to give way from the box? I am not an engineer, but I have seen the threaded portion of those boxes fail before, without fans installed.

That's just funny...LOL.

I think we've all seen that.

Do you think a lag bolt through fan back plate and box bottom into framing member would be acceptable under these conditions?

I've encountered ceiling fans over 10 yrs old hanging from 4"octagon OLD worked(MAD Bars) into a drywall ceiling. Seemed fine until I took the fan down....
