What a sales pitch, just make the consumer feel he had something old and you have the new improved product, of course their new electronic version can never fail, we all know how reliable electriconic device are under a surge.

Three points:

1) I agree totally with the above quote. Remember the KISS rule. How many more components have a chance of failing in a totally electronic meter?

2) Wiggy-type meters are the only thing I trust when checking out 120VAC I/O on PLC systems. They won't lie too you like a typical DVM. I know, I know, some DVM's have an adapter to eliminate ghost voltages, but that's just a 2-3000 ohm resistor. How is that different than the "load" that a solenoid tester puts on the circuit.

3) Finally, an electrician can't get by with just a Wiggy. They also need a high quality DVM, and I don't mean a Fluke T3. They can only check resistance up to about 1000 ohms.

Personally, I carry a Knopp "wiggy" and a Fluke-87.

That was put across better then I could of presented it, thank you

Wiggies, are total junk. You want a REAL tester? Just attach two 18 AWG wires to a 60W light bulb. Want to check 277v? No problem, just insert a buck boost xfer between the leads and the light bulb. If it don't light ,it aint right! You young punks think you KNOW it all!

Sure, good idea, I am sure that gizmo is CAT III rated, like to see that handle a 20kA fault. Us young punks just like going home to see our families at night.

so are all solenoid testers going away or just the wiggy? i kind of enjoyed using a wiggy i had one in trade school but it didnt last long in the real world. one problem they had was the test leads would break. at least mine anyway. the knopp tester was a much better voltage tester than the wiggy was. more heavy duty and higher quality test leads. i also own a vol-con, i got it because the supply house didnt have the knopp

t+pro destroys them both in my opinion.

20kA fault? That is'nt a problem I use them "Suitable for Rough Service" 60w bulbs.
