Re: Fastening NM Boxes

There is no violation, by fastening the box with screws in the side. The head sinks to the side and doesnt extend 1/4" into the box. The scope here is to not have anything within striking range of the device to create a short. Also, those pics are a good example..

Re: Fastening NM Boxes

In regards to the UL article: it's a UL ruling and not an NEC rule. Bottom line (in my book), a drywall screw sinking in the plastic is a one in a million shot at causing a short.....just look at an internal BX clamp...ever have one of those cut a wire?? ..lol

Since all the boxes spoken of are listed, then to install the box in a method other than allowed in it's listing would violate 110.3(B).

So it becomes an NEC rule. :p

Re: Fastening NM Boxes

UL Standards do not permit a metallic screw from within the plastic box to be used for support, unless the box is listed for it. In order for the box to be listed for a metallic screw from the inside, the location of the screw has to be designed for the purpose. Go to Carlon's website and click on the plastic boxes. You will see and read about this type of support method. Even the metallic screws that are attached to the metal bar from a bar box are in the "indented" areas mentioned.
