I would love to have no landline, but the phone companies have their billing systems set up to bill you every time you sit or nap. DSL with no phone is almost as much as DSL + phone.

Proofreading a letter is a lot easier on hardcopy, print, edit, print. With a better machine I do print a lot of stuff I never look at, but for the money, there are a lot of times I am stuck and have to get an image from the flatbed scanner and print or fax. Believe me, I was there using Kinkos and Staples for a bit, copying and faxing. The D 480 gets the work done.

Typewriter, what's that, some kind antique paperweight?

Typewriter = keyboard and printer all in one. :happyyes:

I don't know if this will help or not, but I use it all the time. There are free pdf programs, I use cute pdf, that uses your printer as a pdf maker. All you do is select 'cute pdf' from the printer list instead of your printer and it makes a pdf. So, with a flatbed scanner, you scan something, select print, then select 'cute pdf' or similar and proceed. I have found that anyone that would have a fax machine would also have e-mail and a printer. So far, e-mailing pdf files has eliminated the need for a fax service for me.

I use CutePDF all the time as well. If you move up to the Pro version, you can assemble several PDF's into a single document. Handy for putting together equipment submittals, especially with the markup feature to highlight the model number of whichever widget you're supplying.

We have a fax server, so incoming faxes are stored as TIFF files. The receptionist e-mails them to the recipient. You can also send out faxes by picking the fax server as the printer. It's always nice to have more than one arrow in your communications quiver.

FWIW, I don't have a scanner either so I would have to take a digital picture of the document and fax that.

I'm like you; don't have a fax machine and not about to go buy one.
We use an old laptop running Windows XP and it has a 56kbps modem. We fax through Microsoft Fax Console which is part of the Operating System.

It works pretty well. But probably got old and fat from lack of use.

There is just one FAX machine in our office and that is manned by our receptionist. We still do get some communications by FAX and we have at least one customer (a major industrial) who sends purchase orders by FAX, by email, and a hard copy by snail mail. I work remotely quite a bit and our receptionist scans and emails the FAX to me.......

Surely there can't be many in business now who don't have email??

Thank you. People keep acting like I am lying about it or I haven't thought to ask if they have an e-mail address...

In addition to the building departments, the power company requires faxes as well.

If they have a paper filing system, they would rather get the paper from you than have to print it themselves. (In the case of faxes, the printing is automatic. :))

Even my local council has email.
Impossible to find one that actually directs you to the right place.....
I have a problem on council (public) land outside the rear boundary of our property.
Having had no luck contacting the right department by email, I resorted to calling.
"somebody will come round within five working days."
That was 30th January. Nothing happened.

Last week I spent fifty minutes on a phone call being shunted around from one department to another before I got to who was even prepared to take an interest despite me having a reference number for the originally logged case.

Maybe public authorities are the same the whole world over.........

I think that is part of it for those who prefer faxed documents. It is automatically printed when received. I think they either don't like to depend on email, maybe do not check email often enough to be certain they receive documents in a timely fashion, are not computer nerds, or something. You usually find this with people that have been receiving faxes for certain documents for a long time. People that are technology geeks to any extent usually prefer the email method.

I've had many looks at both of them, I used them back in the late 80's and I never want to revisit that time (as far as technology is concerned).

I'm sorry if my post came across as snippy, but my question was like asking "How do I change the oil on a Ford" and your answer was like saying "You're an idiot for buying a Ford, you should have a Chevy".

we still fax sometimes, but it goes through our digital copier/scanner/printer both ways.

Incoming faxes come to us as a pdf. I very rarely bother to print them out.

windows has a built in printer driver that can be used to fax any file you can print.

People that are more ahead of the times than others do, but the building department still has to hire a live orchestra if they want to hear music.:lol:
