A friend of mine called me and told me about a situation he has. They installed a panel/control panel for a gas station (E-Stop, surge protection, pump controls all built in and pre-wired so you just land your wiring on their terminal stirp). The building electrician was to bring power to this panel. The connected load are a few electronic dispensers and 3 submerged pumps in the tanks. Calculated load is well under 100-amps.
Here's what happened. The company supplying the control panel told the building EC that they needed 100-amps. Then somehow (who knows, probably got a deal on a stock item or mis-purchase for another job and pawning it off here) the control panel showed up with a 200-amp main. The building EC provided the 100-amp circuit. The connected load is still under 100-amps.
My take is since the connected load is still under 100-amps, then feeding the 200-amp MB with a 100-amp circuit is not a problem (there should not be any additional wiring added). Am I wrong/right?
