Field Mod of Panel allowed?

We were standing in front of a NEMA 3R circuit breaker panel at the time and discussing adding a riser with a Myer's hub. The term "load center" is mine. Please substitute the appropriate term.

Right, but load center is not defined in the NEC

Interesting. Thank you. I have worked on all kinds of commercial and industrial panels, but have only ordered/purchased residential style panels. I didn't know I could assemble them from components.

Panelboards have a lot of advantages over load centers
Can is purchased first for rough in, guts installed later
Wider, more wiring room.
Bolt on breakers, can easily backfeed a 60 amp 2 pole for a main
Many options on covers, options, etc.
We found its very inexpensive to order a panelboard full of breakers, than to order separately.
With respect to the original poster, when I see a load center on an industrial or gov't job, it just dosn'tt look right.

I just made a proposal for installing a three phase panel. The panel was complete except I had to order the cover separately. A small bit of progress.
