Re: Finding the location in the attic

Kenneth
I keep a file to sharpen the bit every so often as they do dull quick and I agree that with my 18 volt De-Walt hammer drill If I don't use the clutch They will snap or break loose from the bit/shaft connection. But Loews has replaced every one that I have brought back with out a question. Menard's well that's a different story. But like anything else if you run into obstacles you have to find away around it. and with these bits I try to not push them too hard I just let them do the work when the wood is hard.

Re: Finding the location in the attic

Had a funny well now it`s funny thing happen about 6 months ago.I got a call from one of the other supervisors, did I have my digital camera with me (no I didn`t save the pics) Long story short.Call was for Kitchen GFCI`s not working.Cable installer added a drop in family room,he found the bay he wanted to get into. The receptacle in the same bay was right under the fire blocking so rough guy drilled the opposite side of the bay and looped under the 1 gang box.
well The cable retro fit guy got turned around and didn`t realize this and when he drilled into the top plate and fire blocking on opposite side of the bay as the wire he went right thru the box, device, wire and added the cable drop pulling right thru the nail on box & device(now mangled)
terminated his drop and on his merry way he went.I guess the sparks arching and all that went with it went unoticed

Re: Finding the location in the attic

I use chain when possible. You have to get the chain that is smooth not like jack chain. Drill your hole in the plate, and drop chain, now you do need a helper, when chain is found by sound take a coat hanger, push through the sheetrock, make a 90 in it and rotate. With a hook on the end you can catch the chain and pull it through. the rest you know. The chain is also great for pulling mulitple wires through conduit or walls. Attach the ground wire to the chain and drop back a couple of inches attach the next and so on for NM. It make an increasing cone of wire which pulls nicely through a wall, even to the attic. In conduit attach thhn the same way, then attach the chain to your rope. you can pull many many wires this way without damage. A grip is faster, but in those days dad wouldn't buy such things!

Re: Finding the location in the attic

Ball chain is an old timers trick to getting wire into walls I too was taught this way and I still have a role of it on the truck, Ball chain is the kind that they use as a pull chain for lighting but just a couple sizes larger.

Re: Finding the location in the attic

using the 1/2 inch hole from a N & T job tube has save many of holes to drill.i Will back switch and make lots of junction boxes in attic or under crawl spaces.Any thing that saves time is well worth some extra boxes and wire.Labor is the big cost in rewires or additions

Re: Finding the location in the attic

If you're looking to identify where to drill down to find the wall cavity use the same coat hanger idea. I use a piece at the ceiling/wall point above where the switch will be. Then measure over and drill down - works and a dab of paste fills in the hole from the hanger.
