The most important aspect of troubleshooting any system in general and fire alarms in particular is understanding how each component of the system operates.

a good starting point would be to familiarize yourself with the actual components of the fire alarm system (smokes, Heat, pull Stations, Panels.....), than you can use common sense and few tools to find the trouble.

Understanding and Servicing Alarm Systems, Third Edition

An old reference but very valuable if you are just starting out.

NFPA Pocket Guide to Fire Alarm and Signaling System Installation, Third Edition

Must have pocket reference from NFPA.

Operation of Fire Alarm Signaling Systems

Another must have for any fire alarm designer, installer and technician.
