Fire caulking

In most single family dwellings, fire caulking is not required for most of the building. The walls/ceilings of the garage, common to the dwelling and the boiler room are 2 areas of a dwelling that I can think of that require fire caulking. Most other locations will require some form of "draft stopping". Take a look at the two different areas of the building code that show the requirements.

I have heard of talk that companies will develop that specifically do this type of work, similar to insulating companies.

Has anyone heard of fire caulk certification?????? was talking with a friend who says that one must be certified now to fire caulk. I have never heard of this until now and need to find out if it is true. thanks.

No, it is true. Just use a UL assembly to match the wall, ceiling, or floor design type, this design will be listed on the drawings.

(edit: see post # 12 :sad:)

I assume you are reffering to the 3M or something of the like red fire caulk. Some government jobs I know of have required someone be certified to do it but that was just something they wanted in the specs. I am not aware of it being a standard requirement.

Pierre and Dingo, in short, if you do not match the fire caulking assembly to the UL wall design you have wasted your time and material.

A one hour fire caulk installation in a two hour wall doesn't do much does it?

If the wall is not a UL rated design, there is no need to spend much time worrying about it much less be certified.

Pierre and Dingo, I think I see the confusion, I need to clarify my first post, (poor proof reading on my part) it should have read;

"No, it is NOT true" I left out the most important word of the whole statement. Doh!!!!!

Who is going to do the certifying anyways, a manufacturer?

Update

was informed today that new standard of fire caulk certification is to start Jan. 2007. state by state. Luisianna is first on list. took the certification tests today. word is that improper fire caulking will now be a felony charge if done purposely. hence certification. this is becoming a money scam if you ask me. NFPA is backing this.

how was the test? and the rest of the cert. process?

Just to add my 2 cents, I think the building codes should emphasize more passive fire protections like this. It's simple, effective, and permanent. Now, when the next man in leaves a hole big enough to crawl thru, it kinda defeats the purpose...
