Fire Pits

I've googled in an effort to understand>>>>
https://www.woodlanddirect.com/Outdoor/Outdoor-Fire-Pits
the components all look like gas grill parts>

So my take (so far) is, these are mostly decorative 'firepits' , which may have wood fuel ignited via gas.....?

I kind of doubt there is many if any that are "dual fuel". If there are any you won't be putting the supply receptacle inside the pit like OP had described his situation, will melt down if you get too big of a wood fire going, gas only will have a limit on how big the fire is.

i'm thinking it's got the same guts as a gas grill, ignite app for smart phones, all for the low price of $795 ,w/complinetary marshmallow roaster (i have no idea what that is either)

Not seeing anything in specifications in your link to a gas burner or ignitor, appears to just be a decorative fire box for burning wood logs to me. You would want a stone or thicker metal base to set it on, as that thing will radiate a lot of heat when you have a good hot fire going in it and damage a wood or composite deck floor.

Marshmallow roaster is likely a long wire thingy that you hold over the fire with marshmallow's stuck onto the end of it - valued at less than a dollar a piece.

FWIW, I have a firepit on my deck that's just a simple stainless steel pan on a metal frame, and the bottom of the pan is maybe 10-12 inches off the deck. At first I was concerned that the deck would get too hot, but I monitored it for a while and the deck under it never gets so hot that I can't leave my hand on it for as long as I want.

YMMV, of course.

We have a small fire thingy (I won't call it a pit, to me that is something in the ground or floor) that is a lot like what you describe but not stainless and maybe only 8-10 inches from floor to bottom of pan. We have composite decking material - first time using this thing on that floor it never damaged the floor, but got hot enough to be concerned. Now it sits on a paving stone to prevent radiant heat damage to the floor.

Not just like the op, but my kids called me to the back yard when they were very young to see a ground bee nest, and when I bent over to look a match flew by and a fire ball from around the nest burned my face hair a bit. Big joke for them pissed me off. But it was a hole with fire only filled with gasoline, so.

I use those wax and sawdust fire starter bricks with a bit of fat pine.

Did you whip the skin off their butts? My dad or mom either one would have; they may have taken turns on me for that kind of stunt.
