Hello everyone,
I am an electrician and being involved in a volunteer fire dept. I have been asked
To look at a bldg. in town for its possible use as a emergency shelter. I'm sure there are many
Requirements for that type of bldg. but I'm not looking at that yet. The bldg. has a 102 KW
Generator 3phase 208volt 350 amp breaker. when investigating I realized that the generator was for a 25HP fire Pump only. I was hoping to use the generator for other loads heat, lights, plugs, kitchen loads. When I looked at the main service (800amp) I noticed that the fire pump was fed
From a 400amp breaker on the breaker section of the switchgear. After reading sections of art.
695 it appears that the installation is in violation of the code. It is my understanding that fire
Pumps have to get power before the main disconnect to the bldg. I have two questions, first am I correct in thinking that the normal power feeding the pump is bogus? second, if we were to
use the generator to feed other loads in addition to the pump and installed shunt trip breakers to
Load shed if the pump needed to come on while on generated power, would I be in violation? I
Don't have experience with fire pumps so any correspondent to this would be appreciated.
Thanks.

You are correct that the install, as is, would not meet Codes.
The first thing I would suggest is to check with the Chief Building Official or Fire Marshall to see if the building would require a fire pump with the planned occupancy.
