question: i know to feed a fire pump you can wire it before the main in your service. or in your switchgear size a circuit breaker for locked router (6 times), but why would an inspector tell us that we have to have that c/b (sized for locked router, 6x) wired befor the main - why would you have it go through a breaker? is there anywhere in the code that sayes you have to do it that way.
thanks as always

fire pump

to wire up the fire pump you can go with 695.3(a)(1) wiring ahead of the main. now if you go with an overcurrent devise (locked router 6x) you cannot have this in switchgear/panels this c/b has to be also wire ahead of the main as shown in 695.4(b)(2). in other words you do not use an overcurrent devise you just wire the fire pump ahead of the main. am i reading these sections correctly.
thanks

The fire pump disconnect must always be wired ahead of the main device and in a separate compartment. If the fire pump controller is service entrance rated you do not need an additional device in front of it. If you choose to use an additional device then the fire pump controller is no longer the service disconnect and additional rules must now be followed.
