fire rated walls

quick question,

when installing putty pads in a fire rated wall, do boxes on both sides of the wall need to be covered? For example: an outlet within a stairwell and a switch for a room on the other side of the wall.

If they are located in the same stud cavity or have less than 24" separation the yes.

Look to 714.3.2 in the IBC for a deeper answer.
