Hi, I have a below grade garage with living space above. Both garage and residence have fire sprinklers installed. Do I still need to fire box the recessed lights? My plans state that if both garage and residence have sprinklers (CRC R302.5.1), I do not need a fire door. My thinking is then why would I need fire boxes for the recessed lights?

Any info is appreciated, especially code that I can reference. Thanks!

The door still needs to be self closing and self latching and gasketed, so you may as well put in a rated door. Per R302.4.1.1 you still need to protect all other opening per their listing, so yes you would need to install boxes. You also still need 5/8 drywall on the lid.
